Cutting Sports Isn’t The Answer

Article by Austin Leggett.

Some schools in Florida are reducing there sports. They are cutting the Varsity games by 20 percent and the non-varsity games by 40 percent. They are doing his because of the economic recession and it is getting to expensive to play all the games in sports that they used to play.

Clayton County Public schools is negotiating with the county’s parks and recreation system to assume operation of its middle school sports teams in hopes that the district won’t have to terminate its sports programs to balance next year’s school budget. As it stands now, Clayton’s school system needs to cut $16 million from next year’s budget. Scrapping the middle school sports program would save the district nearly $900,000 a year, superintendent Edmond Heatley told the school board recently. The issue is likely to be addressed at a weekend retreat where Heatley will present the board with a final slate of proposed cuts.

It is unnecessary to get rid of sports because all schools need to have sports programs. They shouldn’t cut sports programs because of money, they should try harder to make them work. I think the school board needs to work harder for schools to keep sports in the schools. Schools should not get rid of sports because all schools need sports teams. Every school should have at least two boys’ sports and two girls’ sports. If schools didn’t have sports then kids wouldn’t learn the concept of hard work, hustle, courage or character. Every kid should know the importance of these things and one of the ways to learn them is by playing a sport of any kind, whether it is baseball, soccer, basketball, tennis, or football. Schools should also not get rid of sports because it’s good to play on a team with other people. You learn to be a teammate and cooperate with people on your team. You also can build a strong relationship with other teammates. This teaches you character because you are not being selfish to other teammates but boosting their spirits to do better at the sport they are playing.

One big reason that schools shouldn’t get rid of sports is that because playing a sport is a good exercise. You need to exercise in your life because it helps your health a lot and makes you stronger. Being healthy is a big thing in life because as you get older you don’t want to have a lot of health problems and one way to prevent that is by being healthy.

Here in Savannah; Islands, Jenkins, Windsor Forest and Savannah Arts have a golf team that is a part of a broad district and not part of the school. They have players from each school that represents their school. There are only four coaches for all the schools because it was too expensive to have a coach or two for each school so they cut the number of coaches to save money. Each school’s golf players practice together but when it comes to competition, they are playing against each other.

Schools need to keep all sports programs because it is important to the kids and parents. We need to all come together and try and keep sports in schools.
